What is Comfort & Joy at Burning Man?

A day-glow oasis of radical inclusion, self-expression, and non-stop joy in the dust.

Comfort & Joy is where queers, creatives, and kindred spirits come together to build something extraordinary. Whether you’re a seasoned Burner or a first-timer, this is your playground, your sanctuary, your chosen family.

We welcome everyone (Radical Inclusion). There’s no buying, selling, or branding here (Decommodification). Everything you experience is created and shared by the community, not corporations. No ads, no sponsors—just us, co-creating something money can’t buy.

How to Join Comfort & Joy?

Ready to Burn with us? Here’s what you need to know!

Engage Early: Since we are going as a smaller camp, spots are limited. Joining early is highly encouraged!

Birgin Pairing: If this is your first Burn, you will be paired with one of our seasoned campers to help you integrate into camp life and navigate the experience.

Application Process: The Application form is open. After filling out the form, we will reach out to you.

Camp Life

Water, showers, food, and a home in the dust.

What we provide: the camp takes care of drinkable water, daily showers, and cooked meals in our communal kitchen.

Our Do-ocracy: Our camp thrives on active participation. Every camper volunteers and contributes to the community, embodying the spirit of a do-ocracy. Participation is key—this isn't a festival, it’s a city we build together.

Radical Self-Reliance: As community we organize infrastructure, but you are responsible for your own shelter, costumes, and personal supplies.

Communal Effort: Everything in camp—art, events, and food—is a collaboration, reinforcing that we build something greater together.

Civic Duty: We take responsibility for the well-being of our community and the greater Black Rock City. From safety and consent culture to responsible event hosting, we create an environment where all feel welcomed and respected.

What’s New in 2025?

A more connected and fun experience for everyone.

Modular Setup

Smaller, more connected camp

Afterglow Space – A dedicated performance, cuddle, and dance area where self-expression and community thrive

More C&J Magic – More time for Touch Events, Tea Dance, and our legendary Naked Pub Crawl—keeping the joy and connection alive.

Upgraded Shade & Power

Participation: Everyone Contributes

A smaller camp means every camper makes an impact!

Fundraisers in San Francisco (build camaraderie & support camp).

4 Phases of Participation:

  • 🛠️ Pre-Burn (Remote & In-Person, Starting in March) – Campers join planning teams to distribute workload and prevent burnout for core organizers.

  • 🏗️ Build Week – Major structures are pre-built and stored in containers, reducing on-playa setup time.

  • 🔥 Burn Week: we are all hosts – Campers take on equitable volunteer roles, with fewer required hours than in previous years.

  • 🧹 Teardown – The shorter, open-sided containers make the process more efficient and less labor-intensive.

Join a Team, Make an Impact:

  • Kitchen, Water & Electricity

  • Hospitality & Programming

  • Communications & Marketing of Fundraisers

  • Erection & Work Parties

  • Operations

Immediacy: time is NOW – be present, engage, and say YES to unexpected, beautiful moments of connection.

Leaving No Trace: Every camper is responsible for cleaning up after themselves. We collectively restore our space to its original state, ensuring the playa remains pristine.

Communal Effort: Cost-Share & Fundraising

Keeping our village sustainable and welcoming for all.

Camp Cost-Share: Keeps us running and supports radical inclusion with tiered pricing, subsidies, and case-by-case assistance for low-income campers—because everyone deserves to Burn.

Fundraisers in San Francisco help offset costs, but with inflation, they don’t cover as much as they used to. That’s why everyone’s contribution matters now more than ever.

Radical Self-Expression: Our fundraisers and contributions are more than just financial support—they are creative acts. Whether through art, performance, or community engagement, each effort reflects the vibrant individuality that fuels Comfort & Joy both on and off the playa.

Gifting: Our camp thrives on giving. Whether it's an art installation, a performance, or just a shared moment of kindness, the spirit of Gifting makes our community thrive.

Comfort & Joy is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, and your donations are tax-deductible. If you can donate, please consider giving.
